3.3.23 "The Late Show: "Is Hip-Hop Dead?" - Episode #1" | by Host, Corleone and Co-Host, Sha77er S7ar
Intro:
Corleone: Welcome to 'The Late Show'! This is your Host, Corleone, here with My Co-host, Sha77er S7ar. We’re here to discuss everything that's Hip-Hop and Rap related! — from the culture, to the music, and the artists who have shaped the genre over the years. Today we’re going to be talking about the evolution of Hip-Hop, lyricist and how they have changed, evolved, and even stayed the same over time. So, without further ado, let’s get started!
Sha77er S7ar: Alright, let’s start off by talking about the evolution of Hip-Hop and today's lyricist throughout the Hip-Hop Culture. We’ve seen a lot of change over the years, from the old school days with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to the modern trap sound of today. What do you think has been the most significant change in the sound of hip-hop over the years?
Corleone: Well, I think the most significant change has been in the lyricism. Back in the old school days, the lyrics had a lot of social commentary, and they were very poetic. As time has gone on, the lyrics have become much more simplistic and focused on money, power, and fame. I think that’s been one of the most noticeable changes in the sound.
Sha77er S7ar: I agree. We’ve seen a shift from more conscious and socially aware lyrics to ones that are more about money and material things. I think that’s something that has been evident for a while now.
Corleone: Yeah, it’s definitely been an interesting shift. I think one of the most interesting things about it is how even though the sound has changed and the topics have changed, the core themes remain the same. Even though the sound has shifted and the production has changed, the themes of struggle, success, and perseverance remain the same.
Sha77er S7ar: Absolutely. I think that’s what has kept hip-hop so timeless and relevant. Despite all the changes, the core themes have stayed the same.
Corleone: Definitely. And I think that’s why hip-hop will always remain a powerful force in music. It has the ability to speak to the struggles of the people and to provide a voice for those who feel voiceless. And that’s why I think it’s so important to keep the core themes alive, even as the sound evolves.
Sha77er S7ar: I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I think it’s so important to keep the lyricism alive, even as the sound evolves.
Sha77er S7ar: That’s right! Hip-Hop is a culture and musical genre that has been around for decades, but where did it all begin?
Corleone: To answer this question, we have to go back to the late 1970s in New York City. The South Bronx was a place of poverty and inequality, and it was a breeding ground for creative expression.
Sha77er S7ar: That’s right! Hip-Hop was born out of the frustration and anger of the people who lived in the South Bronx. They felt that they weren’t being heard or represented in mainstream society, so they created their own music and culture to express themselves.
Corleone: One of the most influential figures in the development of Hip-Hop was DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican immigrant who is often referred to as the founding father of Hip-Hop. He began throwing parties in his Bronx apartment and spinning records for his friends. He was the first DJ to use two turntables to play the same record and to extend the breakbeat, which is the instrumental part of a song. This technique was the foundation for the “breakdancing” and “rapping” that soon became associated with Hip-Hop.
Sha77er S7ar: That’s right! Breakdancing and rapping are two of the four pillars of Hip-Hop culture, which also includes DJing and graffiti art. These four elements all came together in the South Bronx in the late 70s to create a unique and powerful culture that has spread all over the world.
Sha77er S7ar: Absolutely. Hip-hop originated in the Bronx in the 1970s and was heavily influenced by the African-American culture. It was a way for people to express themselves through music, dance and art.
Corleone: Yeah, and it has become a global phenomenon since then. It's become a way of life for many people.
Sha77er S7ar: Definitely. It's spread to different countries and continents, evolving as it goes. It's also become a multi-billion dollar industry and has been embraced by mainstream culture.
Corleone: Right. Nowadays, there are many different subgenres of hip-hop, such as trap, grime, and cloud rap.
Sha77er S7ar: Yeah, and it's interesting to see how these different subgenres have developed and how they all have their own unique sounds.
Corleone: Absolutely. We can also talk about some of the most influential artists in the hip-hop world. Who do you think has had the biggest impact on the culture?
Sha77er S7ar: Well, there are so many great artists and it's hard to pick just one. But if I had to choose, I'd say Tupac Shakur. He was one of the most influential and iconic rappers of all time and his legacy still lives on today.
Corleone: Definitely. His music was revolutionary and he had a huge impact on the culture.
Corleone: Let’s talk about the history of hip-hop. Hip-hop has its roots in the Bronx, NYC in the 1970s. It was there that DJs like Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa began to develop the sound and culture of hip-hop. It has since spread to become one of the most popular genres in the world.
Sha77er S7ar: Exactly! And since then, hip-hop has gone through numerous changes and iterations. We can see this in the different subgenres that have developed over the years. From old-school rap to trap, hip-hop has always been evolving.
Corleone: Exactly. Speaking of subgenres, let’s talk about one of the most popular ones: trap. Trap music originated in the South, specifically in Atlanta, and has become one of the most popular subgenres in hip-hop. It’s a fusion of southern hip-hop and EDM, with its own unique sound.
Sha77er S7ar: That’s right. Trap has become one of the defining sounds of the hip-hop genre. And it’s not just in the US – trap is becoming increasingly popular all over the world, with artists from all different countries embracing the sound.
Corleone: That’s true. We can also see the influence of trap in other genres, such as pop and EDM. Even rock music is starting to incorporate elements of trap. It’s amazing how far the sound has spread.
Sha77er S7ar: Indeed. It’s also interesting to see how the culture of hip-hop has changed over the years. From fashion to slang, hip-hop has had a huge impact on youth culture around the world.
Corleone: That’s true. Hip-hop has become a language of its own, with its own unique slang and style. It’s also become a major influence in fashion, with streetwear being one of the most popular styles today.
Sha77er S7ar: Exactly. And hip-hop has also become a major force in politics, with many artists using their platform to speak out about social issues. From police brutality to poverty, hip-hop has been a major influence in sparking conversations about these topics.
Corleone: So, Sha77er, what do you think is the most important element of hip-hop?
Sha77er S7ar: The most important element of hip-hop is the lyrics. Lyrics are the foundation of hip-hop and they tell a story. They can be personal, political, or anything in between.
Corleone: Absolutely. I mean, it's the words that really make the music. Without them, there's no hip-hop.
Sha77er S7ar: That's true. The lyrics create the emotions and feelings in the music. It's what makes hip-hop so powerful.
Corleone: Definitely. Sha77er, what would you make out of the course of lyrics being written and how it has changed Hip-Hop over the years to past decades?
Sha77er S7ar: Well, I think the lyrics that most artists today are writing has definitely changed over the years. In the past, Hip-Hop was more about telling stories. Now, it's more about creating a vibe and getting a message across. It's become more about being creative with the words, rather than just telling a story.
Corleone: Interesting. Do you think that this has changed the way that people experience hip-hop?
Sha77er S7ar: Absolutely. I think it's made hip-hop more accessible to people who may not have been exposed to it before. It's also made it easier for people to create their own hip-hop lyrics and stories.
Corleone: That's great. So, Sha77er, what do you think are the benefits in the change of style, per say, regarding lyrics in todays new wave of Hip-Hop?
Sha77er S7ar: I think the biggest benefit in Hip-Hop today is that it allows people to express themselves in a unique and creative way. It allows them to tell stories and create vibes that can't be achieved with just music. It also gives people an opportunity to explore different topics and express themselves in ways that they may not have been able to before.
Corleone: That's awesome. So, what advice would you give to someone who wants to begin a career as an artist in Hip-Hop today?
Sha77er S7ar: I would say to start by writing down your thoughts and feelings. Find a beat that you like and then start writing. Don't be afraid to experiment with different words and styles. It's all about finding your voice.
Sha77er S7ar: Yeah, I mean it’s crazy how much impact this new era of Hip-Hop has had on the culture. It’s so inspiring to hear these artists tell their stories and express themselves through their lyrics. It’s really opened up a lot of doors for new artists and new styles.
Corleone: Absolutely, it’s really exciting to see where this new wave of hip-hop is headed. I think it’s really pushing the boundaries and challenging the status quo.
Corleone: In addition to the influence of how lyrics have evolved in Hip-Hop today, I also wanted to talk about the power of this new style of music. Not only does it have the power to entertain, it also has the power to inspire and educate. Hip-hop has always been a tool for voicing opinions and speaking out against injustice, and with the inspiring evolution of how lyrics are being written today not only in Hip-Hop but throughout the entire music industry, itself -- There is no exception. It’s a powerful medium for communicating ideas and making an impact.
Sha77er S7ar: Yeah, I mean it’s amazing how hip-hop has been used as a platform for political and social activism. It’s reached so many people and had such a positive effect on the world.
Corleone: Absolutely, it’s really inspiring to see how powerful hip-hop can be. It’s a great example of how music can be used to bring about positive change.
Corleone: So, let's talk about the latest in Hip-Hop music, news and culture. What's been going on in the rap game lately?
Sha77er S7ar: Well, there's been a lot of buzz around an old album from Kendrick Lamar, "DAMN". It's been hailed as one of the best rap albums of all-time, and it has been topping the charts since its release. There are also some great new mixtapes by some of the new and up coming rappers, like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti.
Corleone: I think it's dope to see such talented up-and-coming artists making waves in the rap game. Speaking of rap, let's talk about what it takes to break into the industry. What do you think are the most important qualities for a rapper to have?
Sha77er S7ar: I think the most important qualities for a rapper to have are creativity, originality, and confidence. You have to be willing to take risks and express yourself in a unique way. You also have to be confident in your style and your lyrics, and be able to project that confidence in your performance.
Corleone: That's a great point. Rap isn't just about having the best rhymes or the most creative flow – it's also about having the right attitude and being able to command the stage.
Sha77er S7ar: Exactly. You have to be able to captivate your audience and make them feel like they are part of the show.
Corleone: That's great advice. So, what do you think are some of the biggest challenges that rappers face when breaking into the industry?
Sha77er S7ar: I think one of the biggest challenges for a rapper is getting noticed by the right people. It can be hard to get your music heard by the right labels and publications, and even harder to get them to take you seriously. You need to be creative, think outside the box, and build a strong network of contacts to help you get your foot in the door.
Corleone: That's great advice. So, what do you think is the best way for a rapper to promote their music and get noticed?
Sha77er S7ar: I think the best way for a rapper to promote their music is to use social media. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube are great for building an audience and getting your music heard. It also helps to collaborate with other artists, both locally and nationally, to get your music out there and make connections in the industry.
Corleone: Those are some great tips. So, what advice do you have for aspiring rappers who are just starting out?
Sha77er S7ar: My advice would be to stay focused, stay motivated, and never give up. Don't be afraid to take risks and go outside of your comfort zone. It's also important to practice and stay current on the latest trends and styles in the industry. And, most importantly, stay humble and work hard.
Corleone: That's great advice.
Corleone: So, Sha77er, how would you define the lyrics today being expressed through Hip-Hop music?
Sha77er S7ar: Different. I think it's going to take a few more decades into the future for the world to realize that Hip-Hop has transcended into a new wave style of music that holds no longer holds any ties to veteran rappers such as Rakim, Nas, Canibus, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and so forth. I think it's tight for Hip-Hop to transcend, as in dialect and meaning but in my opinion, I will forever be more of a fan of true school Hip-Hop. I am old school cat, lol. They're will never be anything quite like old school Hip-Hop music. That's my take on that.
Corleone: That's really interesting. How do you feel about this new wave style of lyricism to come about?
Sha77er S7ar: It is largely attributed to the rise of underground hip-hop in the late 90s. During this time, rappers wanted to go beyond traditional rap and create something more experimental and creative. As a result, they began experimenting with lyrics, which allowed them to explore themes, concepts, and ideas in a more abstract and creative way.
Corleone: So, how has the artform of writing lyrics evolve over the years?
Sha77er S7ar: In the early 2000s, many artists were experimenting with lyrics and creating innovative and creative songs. In the mid-2000s, lyrics began to gain more mainstream visibility, with artists such as Eminem and Kanye West writing lyrics to create more complex and thought-provoking songs. Today, there are many artists that are writing lyrics to create unique and exciting music.
Corleone: What are some of the benefits of writing this so called, "new wave" of Hip-Hop music?
Sha77er S7ar: It can be a great way for artists to express themselves creatively, as they are not bound by traditional rap conventions. It also allows for more abstract and creative ideas to be explored, as they are not bound by traditional rhyme schemes or flows. This gives artists the freedom to create more unique and innovative songs.
Corleone: What impact has this new era of rap music have on the Hip-Hop Culture?
Sha77er S7ar: It has had a huge impact, as it has allowed for more creative and experimental forms of lyricism to emerge. It has allowed artists to push the boundaries of rhyming to create more interesting and innovative music.
Corleone: Well, said. Do you feel that we should discuss more on this topic before we end the show?
Sha77er S7ar: Nope.
Corleone: Are you sure? lol
Sha77er S7ar: I'm sure, lolol.
Corleone: I guess that wraps thing up then, lol.
